We call upon the London Mayor to ban cruise ships mooring without onshore power, inside the extended Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). The ULEZ will be extended east to Woolwich from October 2021, and we believe it should include this extreme source of air polution.
In 2019, 44 cruise ships will moor up at either Greenwich or Tower Bridge. One cruise ship burns at least 700 litres of diesel per hour while moored, the equivalent of 688 HGVs. Air quality in London is now at crisis levels and tackling pollution created by ships should be treated with equal importance to tackling the high levels of pollution from road vehicles.
We urge the Mayor to address air pollution from shipping.
