A corrupt and incompetent Government, whose mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to one of the worst death tolls due to the virus in the world; ongoing social inequality; botched Brexit negotiations which (some fear deliberately) draw us towards a No or at least a Bad Deal; and the climate crisis, all these issues, amongst many others - show that the UK still needs the Liberal Democrats to speak up and fight for what is right.
What distinguishes the Liberal Democrat approach to this is that we stand for:
- The most personal freedom and the least government, consistent with
- The greatest possible social justice and equality.
We want to achieve fairness, equality and opportunity for all without leaving this up to the markets or restricting individual liberty with an overly-involved State. This applies at both a local and a national level.
What have we been doing?
Even though conditions have been difficult, members have been volunteering at Community Hubs, donating to food banks and other local initiatives, and campaigning on local issues including the Silvertown Tunnel. We look forward, as it gradually becomes safer, to get more active in campaigning for change.
What can we do nationally?
Liberal Democrat MPs have continued to hold the Government to account, arguing for better resourcing for the NHS, more support for those affected financially by COVID-19, and an extension to the Brexit transition period to negotiate a proper deal and avoid crashing out at a time when our economy and society are already reeling.
We are selecting a new Leader, who will play a big part in determining what kind of Party we are, and how we livehttps://www.libdems.org.uk/join-local up to what society needs from us right now. Find out about the candidates at https://www.libdems.org.uk/leadership If you want to have a say in who becomes Leader, join by 9th July: https://www.libdems.org.uk/join-local
What can we do locally?
Campaigning for the London Assembly elections (postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19) will be re-starting soon. These will also be a springboard for campaigning for the 2022 local Council elections - this is our chance to make a difference to our local communities. Transport, housing, the environment - Councillors can influence all of these and more. In Greenwich Borough, the Council is dominated by Labour. We want to change this, and empower local people by giving them more choice and more of a voice.
What do you want the 'new normal' to be?
Together we can make this happen. If you see things wrong with society that you want to change, and you don’t agree with the Labour or Conservative ways of addressing these – join us. As Liberal Democrats, we believe in empowering people to make changes based on what works, not on ideology or money. If you believe in this too, we would love to hear from you.
